At a time when subscription revenues are growing steadily, the software industry is also evolving, offering more and more finesse in the management of subscriptions to cloud solutions.

From today, the publisher Autodesk offers a new economic model: pay as you go according to points, or tokens. The offer is called Flex and complements the traditional offers of the specialist in design solutions for trades such as architecture. In 2016, Autodesk dropped perpetual license sales for on-premise solutions, in order to favor the sale of licenses in cloud mode.

But what exactly is Flex? Instead of paying monthly or annual fees to use software accessible in SaaS mode, this offer allows you to buy points that will be used to purchase time of use of these software solutions.

“This new innovative offer combines the advantages of a consumption-by-use model with the flexibility of a pay-as-you-go payment. Flex will be available on September 24, ”says the publisher.

The principle of operation is quite simple. The customer buys points (tokens) whose value is determined by the publisher. These tokens make it possible to operate a logic of “pay as you go” to use software solutions on an occasional basis.

For example, 1,000 tokens allow you to use AutoCaAD for 142 days, Revit for 100 days, or even 3ds Max for 166 days.

End of consumption monitoring

Tokens can be used for one year. After this period, they are out of date. The volumes of tokens purchased can then be used by an indefinite number of members of an organization, in a non-nominative manner.

Use of software such as AutoCAD, for example, is then counted in 24 hour increments. Thus, a daily AutoCAD “session” will be billed for 7 tokens.

The publisher promises with this offer the supply of a consumption management console that allows to follow the use of tokenx, as well as their replenishment.

What about the other editors?

“We are one of the first in our industry to offer a consumer model,” says Jeff Kinder, CDO for Autodesk. “This model complements our basic subscriptions, and benefits businesses of all sizes. For our existing customers, Flex helps ensure they are maximizing the value of Autodesk products. It also makes it easy for existing customers to try out products from our portfolio that they have never used before. Likewise, with Flex, new customers can try our products at a lower price – without a subscription. “

Could this type of offer be offered by other professional software publishers? There is no doubt that occasional users of Photoshop, Adobe (24 euros per month), Microsoft Publisher under Office 365 or even 3D Creator from Dassault Systèmes would be tempted by a software consumption model identical to that offered by Autodesk.

Contacted by ZDNet, Microsoft, Dassault Systèmes and Adobe indicated that they had nothing to share on the subject.

Try software or use it very occasionally

Offers of this type could however meet the needs of CIOs and business departments who have only limited use of certain software solutions in SaaS mode, but who, due to the economic model of SaaS, must pay a high price, even if the software is used little. With the risk therefore of paying very dearly the operating costs with regard to the time of use.

“We can’t predict at the start of the year what a design team will need for the year.
